🔬 What is the golden glow?It represents the accumulation of p21 protein inside the cell nucleus. p21 (gene: Cdkn1a) is a molecular 'brake' — once activated, the cell permanently stops dividing. In the lab, fluorescent antibodies label p21 in bright golden-yellow under a microscope. When the glow lights up, the cell has switched from 'growth mode' into 'command mode', ready to secrete chemical signals.

CSF fills the brain ventricles and spinal subarachnoid space, doing three things: cushioning (acting like an airbag around the brain); nourishing (delivering growth factors and nutrients); and waste clearance (flushing out metabolic waste, including β-amyloid linked to Alzheimer's disease). This study shows that when p21+ senescent choroid plexus cells are removed, AQP1 expression drops, CSF secretion falls, and the ventricles collapse.
