How do mitochondrial plaques form in Alzheimer’s disease?

See how delayed clearance allows damaged mitochondria to accumulate into a plaque inside a neuronal process.

Green mitochondria become damaged and turn yellow. Lysosomes arrive late and fail to clear them in time, producing a plaque dominated by yellow damaged mitochondria. The separate blue structure represents an Aβ plaque.
Green: neutral, earlier-stage mitochondria
Yellow: damaged mitochondria; the dominant final-plaque color
Orange: a smaller acidified, incompletely cleared subset
Purple: lysosomes recruited late
Blue: a separate Aβ plaque

Colors are educational visual encodings, not measurements of disease severity.
